Lucy Ridges
Digital Design & Photography Winner 2007
(Interviewed 21st September 2009)
"Currently I work in the Cornerhouse Art Gallery, Manchester where I have recently received a promotion. I am now the Gallery Supervisor and I also work as an arts technician.
The competition definitely gave me a head start in terms of having the confidence to succeed. It happened as I was graduating so it was the perfect step at the perfect time to start me off in the real world! Winning made me believe in myself and helped me to realise that I could really get somewhere with my work.
It was a great addition to my CV and I still bring it up in conversation as my proudest moment!
Earlier this year I installed a darkroom in the cupboard under my stairs. It has meant that I’m able to print from home now! My spare room is being turned into a studio and I am in the process of starting up a portrait photography business. It’s coming together slowly but surely!
In two weeks time I will be starting a Masters Degree in Photography in Manchester where I now live. I will be studying part-time over two years so that I can continue to work in the gallery and grow my business. It’s going to be tough but I’m looking forward to the challenge.
I have showcased my work at various exhibitions in the North over the past couple of years and I will be exhibiting my work at the Cornerhouse Gallery early next year.
