Maurice Miller Design Champion 2009
(Interviewed 9th November 2009)
"Winning the Northern Design Competition has given me a lot of confidence. It has made me believe in my abilities as a creative person. My confidence has not just grown in terms of my photography, but I feel like my other design work has grown and now I feel assured of my opinions when I voice them.
I am currently working as a freelance design consultant for an insurance company, and as a ‘Creative’ for an agency in Birmingham. I am also really busy developing a website, so that I can showcase some of my photographic work. I am still developing my technical knowledge as a photographer and I’ll be starting a new course in 2010. I want to make photography a key element of my design portfolio and perhaps eventually go freelance. I think it is important to get as much experience as possible so winning the Northern Design Competition has contributed to the opportunities I have been lucky enough to be given. It is also a great talking point in interviews, and meetings with clients when asked to describe an achievement I am proud of.
With so many talented entries making it to the finals, I was really surprised to win. The experience really helped me decide on pursuing a creative career."
